| The following suggested syllabi demonstrate the progression that can be
included in a series of classes under crafts. |
| Model Aeroplane from plastic
kits |
Grade 1. |
Make up and paint a basic model, observing basic skills such as removing
joint lines, avoiding excess glue etc. In addition to producing a model
painted to a reasonable standard, modellers should be able to talk about
the subject being modelled for 2-3 minutes. |
| Grade 2. |
Attempt a more difficult model such as a biplane or larger kit.
Construction should include some minor improvements such as the thinning
down of over scale sections, addition of extra detail etc. Painting could
well be to a different schemes than that offered by the kit box and
instructions involving research and use of reference material.
The modeller will have a deeper knowledge about the subject of the
model and its history/operation.
| Grade 3. |
Here a kit should be built that is markedly different to one made straight
from the box. This could be a conversion to a different mark, use of an
accessory detailing kit or similar. As an alternative to show increasing
modelling skills a biplane could be fully rigged, or a vac-formed kit
undertaken. Painting could include the use of an air brush.
An extensive knowledge of the model subject is now required.

| Photography. |
Grade 1. |
Be able to use a simple camera (probably a compact) and produce prints
(via the local store) free from camera shake and avoiding other obvious
howlers such as cut off heads etc. Some prints should include flash
photographs.
Should examine examples of other types of camera and understand
focusing.
| Grade 2. |
Understand the controls of a non-automatic camera including shutter speed
and lens aperture. Know how to decide and set exposure. Expose and develop
a black and white film and make a contact sheet. |
| Grade 3. |
Use an enlarger and produce black and white prints understanding exposure
and grades of paper. Demonstrate proficiency with a camera of his choice
on a range of subjects including close up and action photography. |
