| Grade 1. |
|
Awarded to boys who have regularly attended instruction and who can
demonstrate practical ability in the following non-contact rescues: |
| 1. |
Demonstrate actions of non-swimmers and weak swimmers in the water |
| 2. |
Rescue casualty from deep water 1-2m distance, without entering
yourself but using suitable reaching aid. |
| 3. |
Rescue casualty from deep water 5m away, without entering yourself,
with suitable buoyancy aid and assist out. |
| 4. |
Make a wading rescue of a casualty 10 - 12m away using a suitable aid.
Assist from water and leave yourself. |
| 5. |
With a casualty 25m from bank in deep water, encourage to use buoyancy
aid, assist to bank and exit yourself. |
| 6. |
Demonstrate ability to rescue casualty in unknown deep water using
reaching or throwing skill. |
| 7. |
Answer questions to show general knowledge of Life-saving. |
| All above practical exercises should be completed in one session. If
arrangements are made for testing by a qualified RLSS examiner, the above
can qualify for the RLSS "Life-saving 1" woven badge. |

| Grade 2. |
|
Awarded to members who have attended a course of instruction with a
knowledge above that in Grade 1 and demonstrate an ability in: |
| 1. |
Mouth to mouth resuscitation. |
| 2. |
Demonstrate the actions in water of a non-swimmer, weak swimmer, and
swimmer with leg injury. |
| 3. |
Without entering the water, rescue casualty from deep water 8m away
using an unweighted rope. Assist them out. |
| 4. |
Approach casualty 25m away in deep water with towing aid. Encourage to
use aid and tow to bank. Assist out and leave yourself, demonstrate
treatment for shock. |
| 5. |
Approach casualty in deep water 25m away, respond to their
uncooperative actions by the Reverse and taking Stand-off position. Return
to safety and explain what you will do now. |
| 6. |
Rescue a casualty at least 15m from the bank in unknown emergency
situation . |
| All of the above practical tests should be completed in one session. If
arrangements are made for testing by a qualified RLSS examiner, the above
can qualify for the RLSS "Life-saving 2" woven badge. |

| Grade 3. |
|
Awarded to members who hold Grade 2, who attend a further course of
instruction and who can demonstrate an ability in the following: |
| 1. |
In the water demonstrate the actions of a non-swimmer, weak swimmer,
swimmer with arm or leg injury, and unconscious non-breathing swimmer. |
| 2. |
Enter the water and rescue unconscious casualty at least 3m from bank,
land and place in the recovery position. |
| 3. |
Enter and approach unconscious non-breathing casualty 15m away in deep
water. Return with casualty & land with help of bystander. Give mouth
to mouth resuscitation. |
| 4. |
Swim 20m to deep water, dive, swim 3m underwater to recover rubber
brick from a depth of 1.5m. Remove to point of support and give mouth to
mouth resuscitation to manikin |
| 5. |
Fully clothed react to finding two casualties in undisclosed emergency
situation, one being at least 15m from the bank. Untrained bystanders may
be instructed to help in rescue. |
| 6. |
Answer questions to demonstrate a knowledge of Life-saving |
| All of the above practical tests should be completed in one session. If
arrangements are made for testing by a qualified RLSS examiner the above
can qualify for the RLSS "Life-saving 3" woven badge. |
