Fire Prevention

Grade 1.
Awarded to boys who have regularly attended a course of instruction and demonstrate a knowledge of the following:
1. The theory of combustion.
2. Common causes of fire in the home.
3.  Actions to be taken on discovering a fire.
4. A knowledge of elementary precautions to prevent the start of fires.
and also
5. To design and produce a poster drawing attention to one or more common causes of fire.
Grade 2.
Awarded to members who have regularly attended a course of instruction and demonstrate a knowledge of:
1. The material covered in Grade 1.
2. Understand the benefits of smoke detectors and fire alarms with some knowledge of their workings.
3.  Have a knowledge of Fire Service Organisation and ranks.
4. Consider ways of making a home safer in terms of avoiding the start or rapid spread of fires.
5. Know the action to be taken after discovering a fire on the arrival of the Fire Service.
In addition they should:
6. Visit a Fire Station and receive instruction from a Fire Officer.
Grade 3.
Awarded to members who holds Grade 2 and subsequently regularly attend a course of instruction and demonstrate a knowledge of the following:
1. Types of fire extinguisher, their correct and safe use.
2. Have an elementary knowledge of fire fighting and the use of hand appliances.
3. Know how to escape from buildings on fire (no lift, keep low to avoid smoke etc.) including both domestic premises and large public buildings, places of entertainment, hotels etc.
In addition members should:
4. Provide elementary instruction at Grade 1 level on the causes and prevention of fire in the home.
