Mountain Biking

(Introduced July 1996)

Grade 1 
Awarded to Boys who regularly attend a course of instruction and can demonstrate a practical ability and knowledge of the following: 
1. Know the history of the Mountain Bike and major components and costs.
2. Be aware of all the safety requirements, including pre-ride checks when using a mountain bike.
3. Know the basic maintenance procedures for mountain bikes. 
4. Understand the basic riding techniques necessary and know how to undertake emergency repairs. 
5. Be aware of the different areas mountain bikes are allowed to use.
Grade 2
Awarded to Boys who hold Grade 1, gained in a previous session, and who have attended a course of instruction and can demonstrate a practical ability and knowledge of the following:
1. Know the code of conduct for mountain biking and the legal cycle routes. 
2. Know the working of the gears and steering system.
3. Be able to carry out the following manoeuvres uphill & downhill: wheelies, bunny hopping and jumping.
4. Be able to complete an obstacle course and play cycle unihoc.
Grade 3
Awarded to Boys who hold Grade 2, gained in a previous session, and who have attended a course of instruction and can demonstrate a practical ability and knowledge of the following:
1. Know how to fully maintain a mountain bike. 
2.  Be able to ride over varying terrain in different conditions (eg mud, sand, ice, snow), 
3. Know how to prepare and undertake a cycling expedition including route planning, equipment and first aid provision. 
4. Know how to physically prepare and train for comprehensive mountain biking.
