1st Stage: Swim
continuously 200 metres, surface dive and retrieve and land on object,
climb out of the pool unaided, as well as swim 50 metres in pyjamas or
trousers and shirt.
2nd Stage: Swim 150 metres distance by any stroke or strokes, within five minutes, and two swims of 25 metres, each of a different stroke, within the times specified below. You have the choice of strokes.
Breaststroke 32.6 seconds Also dressed in trousers and shirt or long-legged pyjamas. Effect an entry from the side of the bath by a straddle or a tuck jump. Swim 50 metres. Tread water for 3 minutes in a vertical position. Undress in the water. Swim 400 metres, surface diving once during the swim, and swimming at least 5 metres completely submerged. Climb out from deep water unaided. 3rd Stage: Swim 366 metres distance by any stroke strokes, within 10 minutes, and three swims of 50 metres, each of a different stroke, within the times specified below. You have the choice of strokes.
Breaststroke 58.6 seconds Also dressed in trousers and shirt or long-legged pyjamas, with the addition of a short sleeveless or short-sleeved pullover. Effect an entry from the side of the bath by a straddle or tuck jump. Swim 100 metres in less than 4 minutes. Tread water for 1 minute in a vertical position, using legs and one arm only. Tread water for 3 minutes in a vertical position. Undress in the water and demonstrate the ability to make a float from clothing. Surface dive in a depth of approximately 180 centimeters of water, (a) head first and (b) feet first, and swim a minimum of 5 metres completely submerged before resurfacing on each occasion. Swim 800 metres, of which 400 metres shall be on the back and 400 metres on the front or side. Climb out from deep water unaided. (Regulations as at 1976)
