Wayfarer's

Wayfarer's Certificate
Awarded to Boys of 12 B.B. age or more who have attended regularly a B.B. Course of Instruction, have taken part in the Wayfaring expeditions, and who pass all the following tests:
(1) Tie the bowline, fisherman's bend, reef knot, clove hitch, and sheet bend; and have a knowledge of their uses.
(2)  Know the points of the compass.
(3)  Draw a sketch map (not necessarily from memory, but without the aid of a map) of a route not less than I mile long showing the principal streets and roads passed, with noticeable objects on the route, and the compass bearing of the map. The route will be chosen by the Battalion or Company conducting the test.
(4)  Walk in one day a distance in miles equal to number of years of age. (Boys with medical certificate that they are physically unfit to take this test may be excused.)
(5)  Collect, mount and name 12 varieties of wild flowers.
(6)  Collect, mount and name the leaves of 12 varieties of trees.
(7)  Identify 8 out of 12 species of native wild birds, or 8 out of 12 species of native wild animals from illustrations.
(8)  Know the " Country Code."

Wayfarer's Badge
Awarded to Boys of 13 B.B. age or more who hold the Wayfarer's Certificate gained in a previous Session, have subsequently attended regularly a B.B. Course of Instruction, have taken part in Wayfaring expeditions, and who pass all the following tests:

(1) Tie the bowline, fisherman's bend, reef knot, clove hitch, sheet bend, sheepshank, fisherman's knot, timber hitch, chair knot; and have a knowledge of their uses.
(2)  Use the compass and protractor in way-finding by day and night, and take bearings by compass, sun and stars.
(3) Read and understand a coloured 1-in. Ordnance Survey map, having regard to the conventional signs, the meaning of scale, gradients, contours and six-figure map references; traverse a route of at least 3 miles, using a 1-in. Ordnance Survey map.
(4) Walk in one day a distance in miles equal to number of years of age at an average speed of at least 3 miles per hour, excluding halts; or cycle 50 miles in one day, on a pedal bicycle; or climb on foot to the top of a mountain whose summit is at least 2,000 feet above the starting point. (Boys with medical certificates that they are physically unfit to take these tests may be excused.)
(5) Identify 12 out of 20 varieties of wild flowers from specimens or illustrations shown.
(6) Identify 12 out of 20 varieties of leaves of trees from specimens or illustrations shown.
(7)  Describe the chief characteristics of 8 native wild birds, or native wild animals, from 12 chosen by the examiner.

Wayfarer's Advanced Certificate
Awarded to Boys of 14 B.B. age or more who hold the Wayfaring Badge gained in a previous Session, have subsequently attended regularly a B B. Course of Instruction, and who pass all the following tests.

(1)  Classify and name, with the help of a suitable text book, twelve varieties of British Flora from specimens provided by the Examiner.
(2)  Identify six native wild birds and describe their habitat and characteristics.
(3)  Identify six native wild animals and describe their habitat and characteristics.
(4)  Identify six constellations and six stars.
(5) Read a weather map and describe the various cloud formations.
(6)  Draw up a route from an Ordnance Survey Map for a distance of at least ten miles over open country and lead others over such a route.
