Semaphore Certificate
Awarded to Boys of 12 B.B. age or more who have attended regularly a B.B.
Course of Instruction of at least 12 Classes, and who pass the following
tests based on " The Boys' Brigade Signalling Manual " :

(1)

Read, with not more than five mistakes,
a message in Semaphore, consisting of ten groups of letters which are not
words, the message to contain two complete alphabets. Rate - five words
per minute.
If necessary, Boys may be allowed a second attempt, the message being
changed.

|
Send a similar message in the same time
and under the same conditions as above - no second attempt to be allowed.
The examiner should take the message and should fail the sender for bad
sending.

Morse Certificate
Awarded to Boys of 12 B.B. age or more who have attended regularly a B.B.
Course of Instruction of at least 12 Classes, and who pass the following
test, based on " The Boys' Brigade Signalling Manual," which may
be taken by flag, lamp, buzzer or tapper:
To read and to send a
message similar to that of the Semaphore Certificate. The rate with lamp
or flag to be three words a minute; with buzzer or tapper four words a
minute.

Signaller's Badge
Awarded to Boys of 13 B.B. age or more who hold either the Semaphore
or Morse Certificate gained in a previous Session, have subsequently
attended regularly a B.B. Course of Instruction of at least 12 Classes,
and who pass the following tests based on " The Boys' Brigade
Signalling Manual " :

B.B.
message form, consisting of: |

examiner should read the message and should fail a 9sender for bad
sending. The rates for reading and for sending to be four words a minute
with lamp or flag; and six words a minute with buzzer or tapper. |

Answer correctly three out of four
questions put by the examiner on Duties of Signallers engaged on Station
Work. |
| (4) |
Answer correctly three out of four
questions relating to the use of the more commonly used procedure and
miscellaneous signals selected by the examiner. |

Use, without error, the phonetic
pronunciations of letters. |
The Duke of Edinburgh's
Award. The Signaller's Badge qualifies Boy in the Pursuits Section at
Bronze stage.
Signaller's Advanced
Certificate
Awarded to Boys of 14 B.B. age or more who hold the Signaller's Badge
gained in a previous Session, have subsequently attended regularly a B.B.
Course of Instruction of at least 12 Classes, and who pass in the
following tests:

Instruct a squad in Flag Drill, opening
and closing of rank. |
| (2) |
*Instruct a squad in Semaphore
or Morse (with flags). |
| (3) |
*Read, with not more than two
mistakes, a message in Semaphore or Morse consisting of five groups of
letters which are not words, the message to contain the complete alphabet. |
| (4) |
Send a similar message under the same
conditions as above. |
| (5) |
Read, with not more than two mistakes,
a message in Morse on the B.B. Message Form, consisting of sixty letters,
in figures, signs, etc. -each figure to count two letters and each other
signal to count the number of letters used in its construction -all these
to be correctly phrased and grouped. Flag, lamp or buzzer may be used. |
| (6) |
Send a similar message under the same
conditions as above. |
| (7) |
Send correctly, and explain the use of,
four out of five miscellaneous signals selected by the examiner. |
| (8) |
Answer correctly four out of five
questions put by the examiner on station duties. |
| (9) |
Use, without error, the phonetic
pronunciation of letters. |
In the Reading Tests only,
a second attempt on different message will, if necessary, be allowed.
In the Sending Tests, the examiner will take the message and will fail the
sender for bad sending.
The rates for sending and reading will be:
Semaphore Six words a minute.
Morse
(flag or lamp) Five words a minute.
Morse
(buzzer) - Seven words a minute.
*Semaphore or Morse in
Tests (2) and (3) will be at the option of the candidate.

Advanced
Signallers Certificate 1966 |
The Duke of Edinburgh's
Award. The Advanced Signaller's Certificate qualifies a Boy in the
Pursuits Section at Silver stage.
