Seamanship Certificate
Awarded to Boys of 15 B.B. age or more during the Session, who hold the Elementary Swimming Certificate, have attended regularly a B.B. Course of Instruction of not less than 12 Classes, and who pass all the following tests:
(1) Define orally eight out of the following twelve nautical terms: Stern, Port, Starboard, Forward, Stay, Shroud, Tacking, Coming to Anchor, Parts of an Anchor, Ship's Time, Soundings, Beaufort Scale.
(2)  Identify (from pictures or models shown) all four of the four different types of Buoys; all Navigation Lights specified in Article 11 of the Rule of the Road.
(3) Satisfy the examiner by oral answers to questions set on one of the following topics selected by the candidate:
(a) Handling sail in various circumstances;
(b) Conning and Wheel steering;
(c) Laying off a course.
(4) Explain five out of ten standard abbreviations (selected by examiner) on a Chart. Relative bearings. Also fix a position by true crossbearings.
(5) Tie and explain use of: Reef knot; Round turn and two half-hitches; Bowline; Sheet bend. Also coil a rope correctly.
(6) Demonstrate how to execute an Eye Splice and a Whipping.

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award. The Seamanship Certificate qualifies a Boy in the Pursuits Section at Bronze stage.

Seamanship Badge
Awarded to Boys of 16 B.B. age or more during the Session, who hold the Seamanship Certificate gained in a previous Session, have subsequently attended regularly a B.B. Course of Instruction of at least 12 Classes, and who pass all the following tests:

(1) Define orally twelve out of twenty nautical terms set out by the examiner and the following subject matter: Parts of a Ship; Rigging; Manoeuvre of Craft; Sounding; Anchors; Ship's Time; Orders to Seaman; Wind and Weather; Tides.
(2) Know the Rules of the Road (i.e. Steering and Sailing Rules. General knowledge of intention of Rules is sufficient). Satisfy the examiner by oral answers to all questions set by the examiner thereon.
(3) Satisfy the examiner by oral answers to questions set on one of the following topics selected by the candidate, but not taken by him in the Certificate Test:
(a) Handling sail in various circumstances;
(b) Conning and Wheel Steering;
(c) Laying off a course.
(4) Explain eight out of ten standard abbreviations (selected by examiner) on a Chart. Also fix a position by compass cross-bearing.
(5) Tie and explain the uses of: Rolling Hitch; Clove Hitch; Fisherman's Bend; Fisherman's Knot. Also rig a sea-anchor.
(6) Execute a Short Splice and a Back Splice.
(7) Recognise and know the meaning when flown as single flags of the following six flags of the International Code: C., N., O., P., U., and V.
(8) Demonstrate practically in a boat the correct method (under oars, power or sail) for
(a) getting a boat under-way from moorings;
(b)  manning a boat;
(c)  mooring a boat.

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award. The Seamanship Badge qualifies a Boy in the Pursuits Section at Silver stage.
