Physical Training

Physical Training Certificate
Awarded to Boys of 12 B.B. age or more who have attended regularly a B.B. Course of Instruction in Physical Training and Gymnastics or similar exercises for not less than one Session of at least 20 weeks each Session, with a minimum of 30 minutes instruction each week. Boys must wear suitable gymnastic kit and have a good record for punctuality, discipline and efficiency.

Physical Training Badge
Awarded to Boys of 14 B.B. age or more who hold two Physical Training Certificates gained in previous Sessions and who have attended regularly a B.B. Course of Instruction in Physical Training and Gymnastics or similar exercises for not less than three Sessions of at least 20 weeks each Session, with a minimum of 30 minutes instruction each week. Boys must wear suitable gymnastic kit and have a good record for punctuality, discipline and efficiency.

First Advanced Certificate.
Awarded to Boys of 15 B.B. age or more who hold the Physical Training Badge gained in a previous Session who have attended regularly a B.B. Course of Instruction for another Session and who are able to execute, in good style and form, the required tests in any two of the following activities. This award entitles a Boy to wear a red cloth under the Badge:-

AGILITY - Any three of the following  
(1) Hand Stand.
(2) Head Stand.
(3) Cartwheel.
(4) Backward Roll.
(5) Dive Roll over 3 feet.
VAULTING - Any three of the following (with or without springboard):  
Cross Horse (or Box)
(1) Knee Vault.
(2) Through Vault
(3) Face Vault
Long Horse (or Box)
(4) Cat Spring.
(5) Horizontal Stride Vault.
(6) Forward Roll followed by Short Arm Overswing.
TRAMPOLINE - In the following two groups:  
(1) Any four Bounce Routines without duplication of Bounces.
(2) Any three of the following
(a) Swivel Hips.
(b) High Tuck Front Drop.
(c) High Pike Back Drop.
(d) Back Drop Half Twist to Stand.
(e) Half Turn Table.
(f) Knee Drop Front Somersault.
PARALLEL BARS - In the following two groups:  
(1) A sequence of three movements without pause.
(2) Any two of the following:
(a) Forward Roll from Straddle Seat.
(b) Shoulder Balance
(c) Bent Arm Overswing from Straddle Seat at end of Bars.
(d) Kick to Handstand and Overswing Dismount from end or side of Bars.
(e) Short Upstart.
HORIZONTAL BAR - In the following two groups:  
(1) A sequence of three Movements without pause.
(2)  Any two of the following:
(a) Single Leg Uprise (Under-swing Forward, Squat One Leg in and Half Mill Circle Forward to " Mill Rest")
(b) Mill Circles Forward or Backward.
(c)  Short Backward Circle.
(d) Hock Swing Dismount.
(e) Back Tension Drop Dismount.
(f) Short Upstart.
(g) Forward Roll.
STRENGTH AND STAMINA - Any three of the following:   
(1) Eight Press-ups.
Horizontal Beam
(2)  Five Heaves (Undergrasp).
(3) Upward Circle (Chin Height Undergrasp).
Ropes
(4) Rope Climb 15 feet.
Skipping
(5) Three one-and-half minute periods with one minute rest between periods.
Running
(6) 440 yards in 70 seconds.
1st Advanced Physical Training Certificate 1966

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award. The First Advanced Certificate qualifies a Boy in the Pursuits and Projects Section at Bronze stage.

Second Advanced Certificate.
Awarded to Boys of 16 B.B. age or more who hold the First Advanced Physical Training Certificate gained in a previous Session, who have attended regularly a B.B. Course of Instruction for another Session and who are able to execute, in good style and form, the required tests in any TWO of the following activities:

AGILITY - Any three of the following:  
(1)  Hand Stand followed by Forward Roll.
(2) Hand Spring.
(3)  Head Spring from not more than 2 feet.
(4) Three Backward Rolls in Series.
(5)  Knee Balance held for eight seconds.
VAULITNG -Any three of the following:  
Cross Box (or Horse)
(1) Thief Vault.
(2) Neck Spring.
(3)  Head Spring.
Long Box (or Horse)
(4) Horizontal between Vault.
(5)  Reverse Stride Vault.
(6) Short Arm Overswing.
TRAMPOLINE - In the following two groups:  
(1) Any Six Bounce Routines without duplication of Bounces.
(2) Any three of the following:
(a) Seat Drop Half Twist to Back Drop.
(b) Cradle.
(c) Full Turntable
(d) Front Somersault (Feet to Feet).
(e) Back Somersault (Feet to Feet).
(f)  Three-quarter Hollow Back Somersault to Front Drop (Lazy Back).
(g) Back Pullover to Seat Drop.
(h) Back Drop Forward Somersault to Back Drop.
PARALLEL BARS -In the following two groups: 
(1) A sequence of four Movements without pause.
(2) Any two of the following:
(a) Swing to Handstand.
(b) Bent Arm Swing and Half Turn.
(c) Long Upstart.
(d) Swing Upper Arms and Backward Roll 1Hollow Back Roll).
(e) Double Rear Vault Dismount.
(f)  Straddle Mount from Cross Stand at end of Bars (Splits-in).
(g) Ordinary " Piroutte " from Handstand.
HORIZONTAL BAR - In the following two groups  
(1)  A sequence of four Movements without pause.
(2) Any two of the following:
(a) Long Upstart (with any Grasp).
(b) Back Uprise (Back-up).
(c) Under-swing Forward, Squat both Legs through Hands, and Half Seat Circle Forward to Half-lever position above Bars.
(d) Foot and Hand Circles (Sole Circles).
(e)  Clear Short Circle Backward.
(f) Long Hock Swing.
(g) Under-swing Forward, Squat both legs through Hands and Half Circle Forward to Dismount.
STRENGTH AND STAMINA - Any three of the following:   
(1)  Fifteen Press-ups.
Horizontal Beam
(2) Six Heaves (Overgrasp).
(3) Upward Circle (Stretch Height Undergrasp).
Ropes
(4)  Rope Climb 20 feet.
Skipping
(5) Three one-and-half minute periods, with half-minute rest between each period.
Running
(6)  880 yards in 2 minutes and 20 seconds.
2nd Advanced Physical Training Certificate 1966

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award. The Second Advanced Certificate qualifies a Boy in the Pursuits and Projects Section at Silver stage.

Third Advanced Certificate.
Awarded to Boys of 17 B.B. age or more who hold the Second Advanced Physical Training Certificate gained in a previous Session, who have attended regularly a B.B. Course of Instruction for another Session and who are able to execute, in good style and form, the required tests in any TWO of the following activities.

AGILITY -Any three of the following:   
(1)  Back Spring.
(2) Head Springs in Series.
(3)  Hand Spring or Fly Spring followed by Back or Head Spring.
(4)  Hand-walk for 30 feet.
(5)  Forward Running Somersault.
VAULTING - Any three of the following:   
Cross Box (or Horse)
(1)  Hand Stand followed by Head or Neck Spring.
(2) Long Arm Overswing.
(3)  Hand Stand followed by Cut-through.
Long Box (or Horse)
(4)  Long Arm Overswing.
(5)  Hand-walk along Box.
TRAMPOLINE - In the following two groups:   
(1)  Any eight Bounce Routines.
(2) Any three of the following:
(a)  Back Drop Full Twist to Back Drop (Cat Twist).
(b)  Barani.
(c) One-and-three-quarter Forward Somersault.
(d)  One-and-quarter Back Somersault.
(e)  Front Drop Front Somersault to Front Drop (Cody).
(f) Front Somersault with Full Twist.
(g)  Back Somersault with Half Twist.
(h)  Forward Turnover to Back Drop followed by Forward One-quarter Somersault from Back to the Feet (Crash Dive followed by a Ball Out).
PARALLEL BARS - In the following two groups:
(1) A sequence of any five Movements without pause.
(2)  Any two of the following:
(a)  Long Upstart and Half Turn.
(b)  Back Uprise and Straddle Legs Forward over Both Bars (Back-up and Double Leg Cuts).
(c)  From Handstand, Back Somersault on to Upper Arms (Flying Back Roll).
(d)  Any Under Somersault.
(e)  Straddle or Squat Dismount from Handstand on One Bar.
(f)  Reverse Piroutte from Handstand (Quarter turn inward on one Bar, followed by Quarter turn to Handstand position facing opposite direction).
HORIZONTAL BAR -In the following two groups:
(1)  A sequence of any five Movements without pause.
(2)  Any two of the following:
(a)  Short Circle to Handstand.
(b) Long Circle Forward.
(c)  Long Circle Backward.
(d)  Cast Off, Cross Hand under and, with Half Turn, Back Uprise (Back-up).
(e)  Long Circles and Cross Hand Change.
(f)  Giant Change.
(g)  Straddle Dismount.
(h)  Hollow Back Fly-away (Back-away).
STRENGTH AND STAMINA -Any three of the following:   
(1)  Twenty-five Press-ups.
Horizontal Beam
(2)  Ten Heaves (Overgrasp).
(3) Upward Circle (Stretch Height Overgrasp).
Ropes
(4) Rope Climb 25 feet.
Skipping
(5)  Three two-minute periods with half-minute rest between each period.
Running
(6)  880 yards in 2 minutes 26 seconds.
