Fireman's Certificate
Awarded to Boys of 15 B.B. age or more who have attended regularly a Course of Instruction of not less than 10 Classes, and who pass an examination on the following subjects:
(1) Common causes of fire and elementary fire prevention.
(2) The system and use of Fire Alarms and the essential action to be taken pending the arrival of the Fire Service.
(3) Methods of entering burning buildings, smoke-filled or gas-filled premises.
(4) Methods of rescue from a burning building and how to deal with clothing-on-fire accidents. Fireman's lift.
(5) Elementary firefighting and use of hand appliances, fire-extinguishers, hose reels, stirrup-pumps, water and sand buckets.
(6) First Aid treatment for burns and shock. Artificial Respiration.
(7) Some essential Knots and Lines used by firemen, e.g. -
Chair Knot, Bowling on the Bight, Clove Hitch and Simple Lowering Lines.

A visit to a Fire Station should be undertaken, if possible, and the examination shall be conducted by either a Fire Service Officer or other person having the necessary qualifications.

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award. The Fireman's Certificate qualifies a Boy in the Rescue and Public Service Section at Silver stage.

Fireman's Badge
Awarded to Boys of 16 B.B. age or more who hold the Fireman's Certificate gained in a previous Session, have attended regularly a Course of Instruction of not less than 10 Classes, and who pass an examination on the following subjects:

(1) The Fire Service Organisation. How it works; types of incidents dealt with.
(2) Fire Prevention and Means of Escape in places of public entertainment and large buildings. Preparation of hall for entertainment purposes.
(3) Fire Station Organisation and appliances.
(4) Construction and use of hand appliances.
(5) Water Supplies. Public water mains, hydrants and how they are indicated.
(6) Methods of Rescue. Re-examination of methods taken in Certificate examination and removal of injured by means of mattress.
(7) Use of Knots and Lines in rescue work. Knowledge of simple lowering lines with risks involved in "make-shift" ones.

The classes and examinations shall be arranged and conducted in co-operation with the Local Fire Service.

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award. Provided that this Examination has been conducted by a Fire Service Officer, the Fireman's Badge qualifies a Boy in the Rescue and Public Service Section at Gold stage with the addition of " actual service " clause.
