It should be noted that the Certificate and Badge may be gained in the same Session

Expedition Certificate
Awarded to Boys of 14 B.B. age or more who have attended regularly a Course of Instruction and who pass an examination in all of the following:

PART 1 -
(a) Recognition of Conventional Signs on the 1-inch to 1-mile O.S. Map.
(b) Measurement of distance.
(c) Simple description of the ground from the information available on a map.
(d) Six-figure map references.
(e) Setting of a map in relation to objects on the ground without compass.
(f) Elementary personal hygiene.
(g) Emergency first aid.
(h) Procedure for summoning help and reporting an accident including the use of a telephone and the sending of messages.
(i) Organisation of a camp, including siting, cooking, washing and latrine areas, refuse disposal and fire precautions.
(j) Cooking a simple nieal under light-weight camping conditions.
(k) Country Code.
(l) Use and upkeep of expedition equipment.
PART 2 -
Undertake an expedition on foot of at least 15 mile across normal country such as agricultural, heath or common land within a cycle or bus ride from towns or cities. The expedition is to be completed in two days, including one night spent in tents, bivouacs or in the open. At least two hot meals are to be prepared during the expedition and no food may be bought en route, but drinking water may be drawn from houses.
Expedition Certificate 1966

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award. The Expedition Certificate qualifies a Boy in the Expedition Section at Bronze stage.

Expedition Badge
Awarded to Boys of 15 B.B. age or more who hold the Expedition Certificate, have attended regularly a Course of Instruction and who pass an examination in all of the following:

PART 1 -
(a) Re-examination in all clauses of Part 1 of the Certificate Test and also
(b) Elementary Compass work, including magnetic deviations, aids to direction finding and route planning.
(c) Finding way by day from one point to another.
(d) Relation of lay-out and Organisation of Camp Site to the purpose of the expedition.
PART 2 -
Undertake an expedition on foot of at least 30 mile across country more demanding than that chosen at Certificate level and unfamiliar to the Boys. The expedition is to be completed in three days, including two nights at separate camp sites not less than five miles apart. A hot breakfast and evening meal are to be prepared daily. Fresh farm produce may be purchased en route and drinking water may be drawn from houses.

Duke of Edinburgh's Award. The Expedition Badge qualifies a Boy in the Expedition Section at Silver stage.

Expedition Advanced Certificate
Awarded to Boys of 16 B.B. age or more, who hold the Expedition Badge gained in a previous Session, have subsequently attended regularly a Course of Instruction and who pass an examination in all of the following:

PART 1 -
(a) Re-examination in all clauses of Part 1 of the Badge Test and also
(b) Detailed description of ground from the information on a map.
(c) Advanced compass work, including the conversion of bearings.
(d) Methods of finding way by night and in low visibility.
(e) Maintenance of a weather log.
(f) Recognition of natural warnings of impending change of weather conditions and the precautions that should be taken should weather conditions deteriorate.
(g) Safety precautions in wild country.
PART 2 -
Undertake an expedition on foot of at least 50 mile across wild country in which the Boys will be dependent on themselves to the extent of being both at some time and distance from any help. The expedition should normally be completed in four days, including three nights at different camp sites. At least two hot meals are to be prepared daily. Many routes will not permit purchase of farm produce and it is expected that use will have to be made of lightweight rations.

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award. The Expedition Advanced Certificate qualifies a Boy in the Expedition Section at Gold stage.
