The Junior Section

& Anchor Boys

Badges in the Junior Section Achievement Scheme

Introduced in 1966. Following the gain of a number of "achievements" round plastic badges are awarded at six stages, white, green, purple, blue, red and gold. These were discontinued in 2004.

Normally, two badges were gained in each year. These were worn on the Junior Section armband on the right arm.
1st Year (White & Green Badges)
2nd Year (Purple & Blue Badges)
3rd Year (Red & Gold Badges)

Boys had to complete five basic achievements in order to gain the White Badge. After that, they had to complete two achievements within the following subject headings to gain each subsequent badge:
Spiritual
Adventure
Community
Interest
Physical

Upon transfer to Company Section, Boys wore a badge representing Junior Section Service (and after 1968, additionally, whether the Gold Badge had been gained). This practice was discontinued in 1976, but if the Gold Badge had been gained, a metal barrel-shaped "Company Section version" was worn on the left arm (bottom row). This was replaced in 1983 by a round metal Junior Section Gold Badge that could be worn in Company Section.

Junior Section Activity Scheme (2004 - )
Introduced in 2004, the new Junior Section material is intended to be activity, rather than award-based. There is a Target Award (awarded in the Boy's first session) and three round badges - awarded in each year of Junior Section. The badges are worn on an armband. Upon transfer to Company Section, the highest badge attained is worn on the left arm.

The Junior Award Scheme is a part of the programme for Junior Section boys. The aim of the Scheme is to provide the boys with some recognition for their participation in the section programme. The Junior Award Scheme uses material under the five following headings:

Body - fit for fun a variety of games and physical activities
Mind - think and do puzzles and quizzes, thinking games and treasure hunts, hobbies and collections
Spirit - God and me devotions, prayers and worship, bible stories and characters, and Christian festivals
Community - me and my world conservation, the local community, the church and helping others
Creativity - make and do crafts, simple cooking, and mime and drama
Two additional headings provide additional ideas and topics:
· Programme on a Plate
Ideas for theme nights including Creepy Crawlies, The Lord's Prayer, and The Senses
· Extras
Information about additional web based resources on a wide range of topics

The Gold Achievement Badge (1993- )

This badge was introduced in 1993. And replaced the previous Barrel shaped Gold Achievement Badge.  It also replaces the plastic Gold Achievement Badge of the Junior Section.  This Badge is gained in the Junior Section Junior Section and was retained when the boy transferred to the Company Section, but transferred to the left arm.
Note that, with the introduction of the new Junior Section Programme in 2004, Boys who served in Anchor Boys or Junior Section can wear the highest badge awarded in each of those sections on the left arm in Company Section.

The Junior Section Service Badges (1982 - )

Although Service Badges were introduced to the Life Boys (later called "Junior Section") in 1956, these were awarded at the end of service in this section, and therefore were only worn in the B.B. Company (later "Company Section"). It was not until 1982 that a series of coloured plastic Service Badges was introduced to signify service in Anchor Boys and Junior Section (though, in practice, these were rarely used in Anchor Boys prior to the introduction of the New Anchor Boys Awards in 2004 (as Anchor Boys would not have an armband on which to wear them). They are small round plastic badges and denote length of service in Anchor Boys and Junior Section. Numbers 1 - 6 worn in the centre of the Achievement Scheme armband.

The Anchor Achievement Badge (1997 - 2004)

Introduced in 1997 this is the only proficiency badge issued in the Anchor Boys and requires 10 Basic Anchor Achievement (at least 2 from each section from the list below) to be completed in their final year in the Anchor Boys. There was one badge - a red triangular badge bearing the letter A. The badge was worn on the Junior Section armband, and upon transfer to Company Section, worn on the left arm (bottom row).

There are three triangular badges - awarded in each year of Anchor Boys (outwith Scotland, Boys start at a younger age, so may be in Anchor Boys for 3 or 4 years rather than the normal 2 in Scotland). The badges are worn on an armband. Upon transfer to Junior Section, the highest badge attained is worn on the Junior Section armband (bottom row), then transferred to the left arm upon joining Company Section.
The Anchor Activity Scheme is an addition to the programme for Anchor Boys. The aim of the Activity Scheme is to provide the boys with some recognition for their participation in the section programme. The Activity Scheme uses material under the five following headings:
